Cook County

Real estate in Pilsen, Chicago.

A dense, walkable neighborhood on Chicago's Lower West Side, built on brick flats and storefront blocks along 18th Street.
A city intersection lined with two- and three-story brick buildings with storefronts at street level.

Pilsen

Pilsen is a Mexican-American cultural center with murals on the viaducts, a long commercial strip on 18th Street and the Pink Line running through the middle of it. It is also one of the places in the city where buying a building and living in part of it is still ordinary rather than exotic.

That mix is what makes pricing here unusual. Two buildings on the same block can be worth very different numbers depending on whether the upper units are tenanted, what has been done to the mechanicals, and how sound the original masonry is.

What the housing looks like

  • Brick two-flats and three-flats, many with an income unit
  • Workers' cottages and raised cottages on narrow lots
  • Storefront buildings with apartments above
